Plan: Probably originally 2-room plan with central entrance and each room heated by
rear lateral stack; stair tower to rear right. End room to left may be of the
original build, at lower floor level, with rear lateral stack. The C18 remodelling
included re-roofing, forming a symmetrical front of the 3 bays to left, with 2 bay

stair to the rear of the entrance passage; the original stair retained as a service
stair, with a rear kitchen wing. In the early C19, 2 canted bays were added to right
and left of the front door. The 2 bays to right form one large room at lower floor
level, heated by rear lateral stack.
Exterior: 2 storeys, symmetrical 3-bay range to left with 2 bays to right. Of the 3
bays, central C20 panelled door with pilasters, single storey canted bay to right and
left with 16-pane sashes; at first floor a 12-pane sash to right and left in exposed
boxes, with central paired 16-pane sash. String course below first floor windows.
The 2 bays to right have pilasters through the full height; first bay has ground
floor 16-pane sash with sidelights and recessed arch over, similar sash above. End
bay to right has 12-pane sash at ground floor, 2-light casement at first floor. Left
side has buttress. Right side has 12-pane sash and half-glazed door, 8-pane sash at
first floor. Addition to right of single storey with attic, with half-glazed door
and C20 casement at ground floor. To the rear, there is a 4-pane sash lighting the
C18 stair, with bay extended to right around the stair, the rear lateral stack rising
from the roof slope. 2-storey rear wing with hipped roof, built around the C17 stair
tower in the C18, has 2 C20 windows at ground floor and 1 at first floor, with single
light at ground floor to right side. To left, there is a single storey with attic
addition, with 3 C20 windows at ground floor and C20 flat-roofed dormer, ventilation
slit to left side.
Interior: The front entrance hall has a stone floor, plain moulded cornice partially
replaced in C20, dado panelling and 6-panelled door to room to right and left. Open-
well stair to rear with moulded handrail, ramped dado panelling and primitive Ionic
column newels. In the room to right, some dado panelling remains. To the rear, the
stair tower has an C18 replacement stair, a dog-leg with stick balusters and ramped
dado panelling. The room to end right is at lower floor level and has panelling of
circa 1930. Rear fireplace in granite, probably re-sited, with Tudor arch with
recessed spandrels with quatrefoils, set behind an arcade with 2 granite Doric
columns. There is a round-arched recess in the front wall. At first floor, with
front 2 rooms each have a 2-panelled fielded door set in moulded eared architrave.
The stair in the stair tower is continued into the roof, of 9 bays, much replaced;
principal rafters are halved and pegged, with collars, 4 rows of trenched purlins.
