attached to rear of 1-5 Barrow
Park Flats
GV II
Range of outbuilding including sawmill and workshops attached by curtain wall to
rear of stables of Mount Edgcumbe House. Circa 1890. Sandstone rubble with slate
roofs. North/south range of single storey building housing sawmill, with east/west
range attached to south of workshops. The wood was taken in at south end of the
sawmill, machinery along inner wall. Forms overall L-plan. Attached to rear of
stables by curtain wall with gateway to north.
The curtain wall is in rubble, about 3 metres high, swept in to pair of square plan
gate piers with plain hipped tops, C20 double gates. Inner side of sawmill, facing
stable rear yard, has 2 single storey outhouses attached. Doors have cover strips,
windows with brick segmental heads. Central section of this range his pitched roof
extended as housing for sawmill machinery, with double doors. The east/west range
has 5 doors and 4 windows, all with vertical lights. Terminates in taller single
storey block with hipped roof, 2 doors, one with overlight, and 2-light casement.
Front outer end has 3-light casement, outer side has two 2-light casements.
Interior Sawmill has trackway for carrying wood along inner wall, with one original
trolley remaining. The trackway is carried on to a raised trestle at the north end
of the building, which has a lower floor level for the sawpit. Winch at end of
trackway. Roof of tie beams and principal rafters.
