SX 45 SE MAKER-WITH-RAME CREMYLL

7/101 Obelisk in the Admiralty Playing Fields 23.1.68 GV II

Obelisk. Late C18/early C19. Portland stone, scored ashlar, granite base to plinth. Plinth has moulded base, square plan, with blocking course. Square plan obelisk. About 10 metres height overall. This obelisk is frequently referred to as a monument to Cupid, the pet pig of Emma, Countess of Mount Edgcumbe; however the obelisk pre-dated the demise of the pig. An obelisk (or other marker) is shown on Admiralty charts from c.1690, although the existing structure is not of the C17.
