Inn with attached stable. Late C17, enlarged and remodelled early C18, with mid-C19
alterations and addition of stable block, C20 alterations. Rendered limestone
rubble, brick dressings to C19 building, hipped slate roof with brick stacks to
ridge.
Probably originally 3-room plan with through passage, 2 rooms to left and one to
right. Lower end to right heated by gable end stack, 2 rooms in upper end heated by
back to back fireplaces. Circa 1730, the front was re-windowed and one further bay
added to right with second flue built to the original outside of the gable end stack.
The staircase, originally at the rear of the hall, was altered between ground and
first floor from a winder to a dog-leg. A rear kitchen wing was built to left and a
stable wing was added to rear right. In the mid C19, a further rear service wing was
added to the inside of the rear left wing, and the carriage house and tack
room/grooms' accommodation was built to end right. The ceiling level of the first
floor room to front right was raised and the roof reconstructed. The early C18 stair
was replaced from ground to first floor level by a wide straight stair in a rear
longitudinal passage. In the C20 a doorway was formed giving access to the front
left room, a bay added to the centre front, and other alterations made. Overall U-
plan with rear courtyard.
2 storeys and 5 bays, 3 centre bays have at first floor paired 12-pane sashes with
thick glazing bars in exposed boxes, ground floor left has projecting bay with C20
windows, central 4-panelled door in gabled porch, to right a paired sash, replaced in
C19 glazing at ground floor and C20 door, at first floor a 16-pane sash, painted
wooden board with Edgcumbe shield of arms. Bay to right has 16-pane sash at ground
and first floor. 3 hipped dormers over central bays with small paired sashes with
leaded lights.
Right side has 2-panelled door with raised fielded panels, 12-pane sash and 2-light
casement with iron stanchions, blocked window at first floor. To right, stable/barn,
not rendered, of 2 storeys, has 2 stable doors with brick segmental heads and 2
loading doors above. Attached to end and projecting in L-plan, a single storey
carriage house, with 2 wide doors to eaves height and louvred gabled dormer.
Attached to end right and enclosing an outer yard, a 2-storey block which formed tack
room and ostlers' accommodation in mixed limestone and slatestone rubble. This at
inner side, double doors with overlight and 3-light casement, two 12-pane sashes
under eaves, all with brick segmental heads. Gable end front has later C19 external
stair to porch at first floor, 2-light casement at ground floor left and round-headed
9-pane light at first floor. Right side of this block has 3 brick stacks rising from
eaves.
Left side has 3-light casement at ground floor right and 12-pane late C18 sash above,
external stair to upper door to left. Rear wing has bay with pitched roof at ground
floor, with 3-light casement to front and single lights to sides, at first floor the
bay has three 20-pane sashes to front and one to each side; gable end stack to rear
wing.
Rear courtyard has stable/barn to left, with door and 2 window openings, ventilation
slits above. Rear of main range has gable end to left with 12-pane sash at ground
floor and 16-pane sash at first floor. 2-storey rear wing to right has C20 windows
and door, 12-pane sash under eaves, 3-light C20 casement and external stair to door
under eaves. Rear right shows 2 gable ends.
Interior: Front left room at ground floor has bolection-moulded fireplace with
mantel, panelled in vertical boarding, blocked doorway to rear of room. Front room
second from right has blocked fireplace, walls panelled with raised fielded
panelling. End room to right has similar panelling. In rear longitudinal passage,
straight wide C19 stair leads to first floor. At first floor level, turned balusters
remain from early C18 dog-leg stair. At first floor, the end left room has early C18
2-panelled door connecting to next room; second room from right end has bolection-
moulded fireplace and panelled cupboards, formerly a gable end room. Stair to attic
level is the late C17 winder, with stepped moulded wainscot, panelling of vertical
boarding and one carved splat baluster remaining. Attic has 3 rooms to left end,
over C17 building, panelled doors with strap hinges and L-hinges. 8-bay roof,
principal rafters only visible.
Interior of stable wing to rear right has central passage with solid rubble walls,
C20 roof with 2 early tie-beams remaining to rear.
The ferry landing at Cremyll beach dates from 1730, and the Edgcumbe Arms became a
passage house at about this date.
