Details

PERRANZABULOE REEN
SW 75 SE
5/104 Former barn adjoining Reen Manor
House (formerly listed as Out-
30.5.67 buildings at Reen Manor)
GV II

Barn of Manor of Reen, now converted to living accommodation. Possibly Medieval or
C16, re-roofed circa early C19, re-floored in the C20. Mixed rubble walls with some
dressed granite. Delabole rag-slate roofs with gable ends. Probably C20 rubble
chimney at the right-hand end.
Plan: L-shaped plan with rear wing (at right angles behind right-hand side) built
into the bank at the rear, and with porch giving access to first floor. Later lean-
to at left-hand side of porch. At either side of the front is a small projecting
former stair tower. The left-hand tower links the barn to the C17 range of Reen
Manor House (qv). Threshing floor with opposing doorways is left of middle.
Exterior: 2 storeys. 2-window south west front has 3 original weathered buttresses
(left, right and middle). Possibly C16 or C18 remodelling or enlargement of older
openings) basket-arched openings. Remains of former probable stair tower at far left
and right. Old doorway to left-hand tower with blocked window over; later or
remodelled doorway to other tower with original slit window over first-floor;
loading/winnowing doorway, left of middle buttress. C20 doors and windows.
Rear has similar openings.
This is a most interesting building and compares with the old barn at Golden Manor
(qv), Probus parish.
It is recorded that a house was newly-built at Reen in 1590, a possible date of
construction or remodelling of this building.
Interior: Circa early C19 king-post roof structure, otherwise C20 features.
Source: Information extracted from research notes in the possession of the present
occupier.
