3/201 Garrick Vean

4.7.73 II

House and adjoining cottage, now 1 house. Circa late C18 and early C19. Painted rubble walls, slate sills. Wheat reed thatched roof sweeping lower to rear with thatch enclosing brick chimneys over gable ends, axial chimney over party wall and left-hand chimney over external breast. Plan originally of 2 equal reception rooms flanking through passage with shallower service room on either side to rear within outshut. Extended circa early C19 by cottage 1-room wide with service room behind and later lean-to on right. 2 storeys with first floor rooms partly in roof space. Symmetrical 2-window front of original house, left and 1-window front of cottage, right. House has central doorway with C20 glazed door and C20 glazed porch. Otherwise openings all have C20 2-light casements with small panes. First floor windows are partly dormered. Interior is fairly renewed in the C20 but retains original floors and roof structures. Hearths partly blocked. Surviving thatched houses in this part of Cornwall are rare, (this is one of only four in this parish and in some neighbouring parishes there are none) and although altered in the C20 this house is structurally fairly complete.
