5/270 Barn, north of Truthall -
GV II
Granary over stable and waggon shed with adjoining older shippon. Circa mid C19 and probably C18 but possibly on the site of ancient buildings or walls. Roughly coursed granite rubble with dressed granite quoins, jambstones, sills and lintels; the building on the right is lime-washed rubble. Hipped scantle slate roof over the barn and grouted scantle slate roof with gable end, right, over the lower shippon. Rectangular range comprising probably a stable or loose box left and former waggon shed right and earlier single storey shippon far right. The ground floor of the barn was remodelled probably as a shippon circa late C19, a window inserted under the first floor loading door and the wide waggon entrance doorway reduced to become a narrow doorway. The shippon (possibly truncated when the barn was built) has a doorway adjoining the barn and a slit window to the middle of the front. 2 storey barn with single storey shippon, right. East front: barn has slightly irregular 2 window front with a first floor loading/winnowing doorway left of middle and a shuttered 2-light window at either side. Under the left-hand window the doorway is original, otherwise see plan description. Interior not inspected. This building fills most of one side of a courtyard in front of the C15 range of Truthall qv. and may be on the site of early buildings.
