Details

SOUTH PEThERWIN SX28SE Treguddick 1/20 1.12.51 GV II* Farmhouse. Circa late C16 (dated 1576) remodelled and extended after a fire in 1878. Stone rubble with granite dressings. Slate roof with half-hipped and gabled ends and ridge tiles. Lateral and gable end stacks with late C19 red brick shafts. 3-room-and-through-passage main range, facing east, the high end to the right (north). 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window east front. Cavetto-moulded granite 3-light mullion windows with hoodmoulds. The 2 ground floor right hand windows have 4 lights with king mullions and quatrefoil label stops. All casements with leaded panes. Central 2-storey porch with hipped roof, weathervane and moulded granite 4- centred arch doorway with sunken spandrels, hoodmould and inscription over. "Anno Domini 1576 N.T". Doorway of left of front with chamfered 4-centred arch frame. On right above ground floor windows a granite coats of arms, quartered with lions guardout and flew-de-lis and date 1878. Shield in north gable end. At rear central stair tower with half-hipped roof and chamfered 4 central arch doorway, small window to left and large segmental-headed windows on ground floor and 3-light segmented-headed window on first floor with plastic frame. On right parallel range with segmental headed 4- pane sashes and single storey outshut. Interior: Screens passage has 4 centred arch front and rear doorways with draw bars, the front with fern-leaf spandrels, 4-centred arch service doorway and Victorian gothic doorway to hall. Hall has large moulded granite 3-centred arch fireplace with carved fern-leaf spandrels and 4-centred arch doorway to left of stairs; C19 moulded plaster ceiling cornice. On high end wall of hall a very large plaster Royal Arms of Elizabeth I dated 1593. Lower end room has Victorian gothic chimneypiece and arched alcoves either side. Kitchen behind lower end has large moulded granite 3-centred arch fireplace with sunken spandrels. Dairy has large slate-top table, slate shelves and grille to salting room with granite salting troughs. Old plank doors inside. First floor and roof structure not inspected (roof said to have been rebuilt) Historical Note: The initials over the front doorway are those of Nicholas Treguddick who built the house in 1576. The large Royal Arms of Elizabeth I in the hall is reputedly to mark a visit by the Queen in 1593.
