NORTH PETHERWIN SX 28 NE 8/118 The Glebe 23.8.57 II
Rectory now farmhouse. Probably C17 origins, extended in mid C18 and partly remodelled in early C19. Rendered and painted stone rubble and cob. Rag slate roof with gable ends to front range and hipped ends to parallel range across rear. Projecting end stack with C19 brick shaft on left and similar shaft to end stack on right. Plan: Double depth plan with wide through passage. 2 principal rooms to front, the larger room on right, heated by end stacks and with service rooms to rear. The original plan is uncertain; the house was probably of 2 or 3 room and passage plan, heated by end stacks. The house was then extended with a parallel range to form a double depth plan in the mid C18. It is uncertain whether the front or rear of the house is earlier as there are very few early dateable features visible. In the early C19 the house was refenestrated and much of the joinery was replaced. Exterior: 2 storeys. Almost symmetrical 3-window front with entrance to left of centre. C20 door. Early C19 3-light casements with pointed headed lights and thin metal glazing bars on outer face with timber glazing bars on inside. Stanchion bars. Pointed 2-centred arched arcade motif to eaves fascia. C20 P.V.C. windows in rear elevation. Interior: Wide through passage with early C19 stair on left hand side; turned newel, stick balusters and slightly ramped rail. Boxed-in large beams in rear range. Roof structure of front range with A-frame trusses, halved, lap-jointed and pegged at apices. Collars partly halved, lap-jointed and pegged. Principals and collars roughly chamfered and with complete sequence of carpenters marks. Rear range has rougher trusses of A-frame construction, partly halved, lap-jointed and pegged.
