8/56 Dovecote and flanking walls in
- stable yard at Penheale
GV II
Dovecote and flanking walls. Probably C18. Stone rubble with dressed stone quoins.
Octagonal slate roof with deep overhanging eaves and octagonal slate cap.
Plan: The dovecote is of octagonal plan on the exterior and circular plan on the
interior. It was probably originally of 2 stages with a line of large recesses at
ground floor level, possibly used for geese with nesting holes above, possibly for
hens. The bolins are restricted to the top stage with an access-hole provided in the
roof. The roof was renewed in the 1980s following the design of the earlier
structure.
Exterior: Octagonal dovecote of two stages; dressed stone segmental arch to entrance
with similar door opening directly above, flanked by unglazed windows with timber
frames. There is a slate string near the top, on all faces. The octagonal slate
roof has deep overhanging eaves and is surmounted by an octagonal slate cap with a
continuous access hole for the pigeons between. The cap is raised on corbelled
brackets which are integral with the radiating trusses of the roof structure.
Flanking the dovecote are high stone rubble walls with battlemented tops which form
the south wall enclosing the stable yard.
Interior: The floor and potence has been removed. There is a line of large niches
at floor level with nesting holes, possibly for hen boxes above. Above the line of
the first floor are several rows of bolins for the pigeons.
