BOYTON SX 39 SW 5/3 Barn 30 metres to west of Beardon - GV II

Barn comprising shippons with threshing floor, granary and hay loft above. Circa early C18 origins, probably partly rebuilt or extended in mid C19. Local stone rubble and cob with remains of moulded stone plinth. Rag slate roofs with gable ends. Plan: Overall rectangular plan, built into side of bank, it is a bank barn with 2 storeys to front and single storey to rear, the rear wall partly demolished in C20. Shippon openings on ground floor with threshing floor above, to right of centre. Granary and hayloft on first floor. Extended to left in circa mid C19. Exterior: 2 storey front elevation, the earlier range to right has entrance set slightly forward with plank doors on ground and first floor. Timber lintels to the asymmetrically placed openings and external stone rubble stair to left. Later circa mid C19 stone rubble range to left has dressed stone segmental arches on ground floor and rectangular window openings on first with line of pigeon holes below the eaves. Interior: Roughly chamfered large floor joists to earlier range which has roof trusses with flush apices, halved, lap-jointed and pegged.
