Farmhouse, now house. Circa mid C17, with additions and alterations of C18 and C19,
some C20 alterations. Granite and slatestone rubble. Slate roof with ridge tiles
and gable ends. Gable end stacks with rendered shafts, the stack to left with shaped
top.
Plan: originally a 2-room plan house, with the lower end room to right, heated from a
gable end stack. This would have been a hall/kitchen. There was originally a lobby
entrance, and the parlour to end left, heated from a gable end stack. Probably in
C19, this arrangement was altered so that the parlour was reduced in size and a
straight stair inserted along the right side of the parlour ; the entrance now leads
directly to the stair. There is a single storey unheated outshut to rear centre,
possibly pre-dated the insertion of the stair, entered from a door at the rear of the
hall/kitchen. Probably later in the C19, a shippon and stable was added to the lower
right end, of 2-storeys, the upper storey now incorporated as part of the house.
Attached to the upper left end in the C19, a small barn ; this was originally
adjacent to the house, and has been joined to the house by an infill which contains a
pigeon loft.
Exterior: Long range ; the original house has a 2-storey asymmetrical 2-window front
; all windows are C20 casements. The parlour to left has a projecting bay, with a
shallow porch set in the angle to right. The parlour bay has a window at ground
floor, with raking dormer above. Porch has a half-glazed C20 door, open-fronted,
with pitched roof. The lower end to right has 3-light window at ground floor and 2-
light window at first floor. At the left end, the barn has 3 doors at ground floor,
the central one blocked, with granite lintels ; first floor loading door with
pitched hood and small opening to right. The infill building is to right, with doors
at ground floor and narrow window opening above with 4 square pigeon holes. At the
lower end, the 2-storey shippon and stable has 2 small windows at first floor, small
window and double doors with timber lintel at ground floor to left ; single stable
door to right and C20 greenhouse attached to front right. Ventilation slit to right.
The shippon is built into the bank at the rear. The right end has been rebuilt in
C20 with window at upper level. At the rear, the single storey outshut has C20
window and door. To left, the shippon and stable has external stone stair to loft
door to left, small C20 window at first floor to right. The barn to right has
external stone stair to a loft door to left and right, lower window opening off-
centre to right with granite lintel. This barn is half built into the bank at the
rear.
Interior: At ground floor there is slate paved floor throughout. The hall/kitchen to
right has C19 beams, end fireplace to right with timber lintel and oven to rear. The
fireplae has been reduced in size. The site of the former stair is to rear right of
the room. One toughly chamfered beam remains ; C19 wooden partition to the straight
stair to left. The parlour has a fireplace rebuilt in C20, with shallow shelves to
left and a recess in the rear wall. On the first floor, the feet of the principal
rafters are boxed.
