Farmhouse. Circa early C17, possibly with earlier origins. Rendered and painted
slate stone rubble. Rag slate roof partly renewed in C20. Lower range on left with
gable end to front left. Higher range on right with gable end on lower left hand
side and gable end to front wing on right. Possibly inserted stone rubble stack,
renewed in circa mid C20 on lower side of passage; rendered stone rubble axial hall
stack on higher side of passage and rendered projecting stone rubble stack to front
wing on right.
Plan altered and the original arrangement is not clear. It is uncertain whether the
circa C16 arch at the entrance to the through passage is original or has been reused
from an earlier house. The roof structure has been largely replaced in the C18, C19
and C20 and the joinery is largely mid C17 and later. Possibly originally a 2 or 3
room and through passage house with thick walls continuing up to apex on higher and
lower side of passage and on higher side of hall, the right hand room. The lower end
appears to have been partly rebuilt with what appears to be a straight joint on the
lower side of the passage on the front and a more evident straight joint on the
higher side of the passage on the rear. The entrance to the through passage has a
circa early C16 arch and the passage has been widened to form a small room, heated by
a possibly inserted stack on the lower side (compare plan type with Lower Beeny
Farmhouse, St Juliot). The wall on the lower side of the passage has been partly
rebuilt in circa mid C20 although the fireplace is probably C19 with a bulge for a
cloam oven visible on the lower side. The hall to the right is heated by an axial
stack which backs on to the passage with the thick cross wall continuing to the rear
of the fireplace, possibly indicating the position of a blocked stair. It is
uncertain whether the original house had an inner room, the thick wall on the higher
side of the hall may have been an external wall. Alternatively this large inner room
which continues in a front wing heated by an end stack may have originally been much
smaller and extended or rebuilt as a parlour wing in circa mid C17. It is however
not unusual in this part of Cornwall to find a inner room of almost twice the size of
the hall in a circa early C17 house.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front with lower range on left. Plank door to loft
on left. Main range with C20 window in earlier sash opening, circa C16 segmental
greenstone arch with chamfer and circa C19 door. 2-light casements to right. First
floor with two 2-light casements in half dormers with raking roofs. To right, gable
end of parlour wing with projecting stack.
Interior : Circa C19 fireplace inserted to heat remodelled passage with circa late
C19 stair adjoining fireplace on rear. Hall heated by axial stack which backs onto
passage with C20 fireplace. This cross wall is very thick and probably contains a
large hall fireplace. The ceiling beams in the hall are roughly chamfered and the
heavy cross beam has been reused. The inner room has a C20 fireplace and some circa
C17 ceiling beams, the other beams circa C20.
Roof structure. Circa C18 roof structure above inner room partly renewed in C19 with
2 trusses, halved, lap-jointed and pegged at apices, the collars halved, lap-jointed
and pegged onto the face of the principals. 2 trusses above hall of circa early and
late C19, 1 truss bolted, the other lap-jointed and pegged at apex with collar lap-
jointed and pegged onto face of principals.
