Details
TINTAGEL BOSSINEY SW 08 NE Old Borough House 4/174 II House, now guest house. Circa early C17, extended in circa mid C17, in late C18, in mid C19 and partly remodelled in mid C20. Slate stone rubble. Rag slate roof. Gable ends to range set back on left. Hipped end on left to central range with gable end to cross wing on right; hipped end to rear of cross wing and gable end to rear wing. Stone rubble axial stack, originally rear lateral stack to rear of central range; stone rubble stack with brick shaft on front gable end and on rear hipped end of cross wing on right; projecting stone rubble stack to gable end of rear wing. Plan: original plan considerably altered. The C17 house appears to have comprised of at least a 3-room plan with only the central room now surviving originally heated by a rear lateral stack. The possible lower end on left was probably rebuilt in the C19 and the higher end on right has only part of the front wall surviving; incorporated as a cross wall in the right hand cross wing: this wall is out of alignment with the central range being set back. In circa mid C17 a probably kitchen wing was added to the rear of the central room, heated by a gable end stack. In circa late C18 the cross wing was added to the right of the central room on the site of the probable earlier inner room. This is of a 2 room plan heated by end stacks. In circa early C19 the lower end on left was probably rebuilt as an outbuilding and in circa mid C20 it was remodelled becoming part of the house. In circa late C18 a further service range was added on the higher, right hand side wall of the rear kitchen wing, over the well. This range was then remodelled in the mid C19 when the roof was removed, a further range was added on the higher right hand side and the C18 range became a courtyard. In circa mid C20 this courtyard was then roofed and became part of the house again. 2 storeys. Regular 2:2 window front with 2 storey range set back on left and gable end to cross wing on right. Left hand range has a part glazed C20 door in partly blocked opening. 12 pane sash to right and 2 12-pane hornless sashes to half dormers with raking roofs on first floor. Main range has dressed stone arches to ground floor openings, a part glazed 6-panel door near angle with cross wing on right, early C19 12-pane hornless sash to left, and 2 early C19 16-pane hornless sashes on the first floor. Cross wing on right has early C19 12-pane hornless sashes on ground and 1st floor. Interior : partly remodelled in C19 and in C20. Rear kitchen wing has a circa mid C18 corner china cupboard with shaped shelves. Several C18 2-panel doors. Reputed to be house of mayor of Borough of Bossiney.
