Dovecote, Tintagel Vicarage

GV
II*

Dovecote. Medieval. The thick local slate stone rubble masonry to the walls and
conical roof is of fine quality construction. Circular plan, built into side of
bank. The dovecote is of single storey with a low domed vaulted roof. Small plank
door with timber lintel on lower side on north. Access-hole in top to-admit pigeons,
light and air, partly sealed with a large flat stone on supports.
Interior : 247 rectangular nesting holes, alternatively known as bo-lins, arranged in
13 tiers. The potence has been removed. Remains of limewash on internal walls.
Stands close to Tintagel Vicarage and gatehouse.
Henderson suggests that this dovecote may date from the C13. Cornish terriers
indicate that 8 Cornish rectories and 1 vicarage (Tintagel) possessed stone dovecotes
in the C17 and C18.
Scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
