1/79 Valley View
GV II
House. 1887 extended in early C20. Slate stone rubble with brick dressings and
partly tile hung. Slate roof with hipped ends. Brick axial stacks.
Built into side of a steeply sloping bank almost sheer with single storey elevation
to road and 2-storey elevation on lower side with deep battered base. The plan is
well designed to accommodate the awkward site and to take advantage of the
magnificent views. Originally with single depth plan, the entrance in the side wall
leading into a stair hall with reception room on lower side (right) and service room
against the bank on the left. In circa early C20 the house was extended to the rear
with a second larger reception room with an octagonal corner turret overlooking the
harbour.
2 storeys: 1:2:2 window front with segmental brick arches to openings. 2 storey bay
projection on front and terracotta octagonal corner turret on right. Circa early C20
2 storey porch to left, the tile hung second storey supported on two timber columns.
Interior partly remodelled in C20 with chimney-pieces rebuilt.
Forms part of a group of similar houses overlooking a steep-sided combe leading down
to Boscastle Harbour; the other houses are Lewarne, Meachard, Glenfinart, Penrowan,
Belmont and Polqueens (qv).
