GWINEAR-GWITHIAN CATHEBEDRON ROAD, Carnhell Green SW 63 NW 5/17 Carnhell Farmhouse, adjoining - engine house, barn, front garden walls and gate-piers

GV II Farmhouse, adjoining horse-engine house, barn, front garden walls and gate-piers. C17 on C14 or earlier site, remodelled in the C18 and circa early C19, former home of the Carnhell family including Sir Edward Carnhell. Granite rubble with granite dressings. Grouted scantle slate roofs, hipped or half-hipped. Brick chimneys at the hipped ends. Cast-iron ogee gutters. Plan: L-shaped house with 2 large rooms in the long main range with stair hall between and a 1-room plan parlour wing with another entrance lobby and stair hall between the 2 ranges. The right-hand room of the main range is the kitchen and was probably always the hall/kitchen and there is a C19 parallel service range behind. In front of the parlour is a horse-engine house which once operated a mill and adjoining on its right is a barn with granary over a shippon. Exterior: 2 storeys. Slightly irregular 3 window south front of main range with parlour wing at right angles in front on the right with its 2-window front-facing left. The main doorway has circa early C20 door, the doorway of the parlour wing is blocked. The windows are circa early C20 6-pane horned sashes in C18 or C19 openings. Blocked in at rear of the stair is said to be the chamfered outer frame of a mullioned window. Engine house has large doorway at the front and small window at rear left. Barn has symmetrical front with central doorway with loading/winnowing doorway over small ventilator slits for shippon, first floor window blocked. C20 steps at rear. Interior: circa 1800 dog-leg stair and some panelling in the entrance lobby of similar date or possibly C18, otherwise circa early C19 carpentry and joinery. Very large, partly blocked fireplace in kitchen. Granite coped rubble walls parallel to front of house with quadrant-on-plan returns to gateway with granite monolithic piers.
