Details

MAWGAN-IN-PYDAR ST MAWGAN SW 86 NE 1/72 The Falcon Inn - GV II

Inn. Circa 1840, with additions and alterations of later C19 and C20. Stone rubble with brick and stone dressings. Hipped slate roof with ridge tiles and deep bracketed eaves. Central front lateral stack with brick shaft. Plan: Double depth plan, with central entrance and principal room to front right and left; now all one room at ground floor. A wing was added to rear right, of 2-room plan, with the rooms heated from an axial stack; this facade was treated as a garden front, with service rooms to rear. One-room plan addition of C19 to the rear of the rear wing, unheated. Exterior: 2 storeys, symmetrical 3-window front. Ground and first floor right and left an early C19 2-light casement, 3 panes each light with Chinoiserie margin glazing, segmental brick arches with keystones. First floor central blind painted casement with similar arch and inn sign hanging in front of the window. Central 4- panelled door with fanlight set in recessed round arch with brick head and keystone. The right side has 6 similar 2-light Chinoiserie casements with brick segmental arches and keystones at first floor. Second window from left blind. Ground floor has 3 similar casements; third bay from left has an open-fronted porch with pitched roof on granite Doric columns, with C20 half-glazed door. To right, there is a recessed bay, with the upper storey supported on 2 granite Doric columns, forming a covered area with half-glazed door and 2-light 3-pane casement; door to right and left. Straight joint to right to the end bay with similar Chinoiserie casement at ground and first floor. The rear of the wing has 4-pane sash at ground and first floor and 4-pane sash at ground floor on the inner side. The main range has a door and single storey lean-to to right with 2-light casement. The inner side of the wing has 4 Chinoiserie 2-light casements at first floor. Ground floor has C20 door and two 2-light casements to right; lean-to to left with door and two 2-light casements. Interior: Not inspected.
