ST SAMPSON CHURCH HILL, Golant
SX 15 SW
8/246 Holy well attached to the south
- side of the south aisle of Church
of St Sampson
GV II

Holy well. Late C15. Granite rubble with a lean-to stone roof, which is roughcast
on the top. Very small single cell building, about one metre high, with sink in the
bottom, and doorway facing east. There is an opening in the west side of the porch
of the Church of St Sampson, (q.v.) which gives a covered access to the well.
The well has rubble walls on a roughly hewn plinth, and a lean-to roof abutting the
south wall of the south aisle of the Church of St Sampson. To east, a 3-centred
arched doorway, chamfered, with wrought iron gate across, probably of late C19.
Interior The roof is a stone vault. The sink in the bottom is below the level of
the ground outside, and is fed by a small opening in the rear wall. Set on the rear
wall is a small moulded stone bracket for an image.
