26/161 Church of St Cuthbert 6.2.68 II
Parish church; C13 and later, incorporating some reset C12 work. Coursed, squared rubble with quoins on chamfered plinth. Graduated slate roof with stone-flagged eaves to north side; gabled bellcote to west end dated 1894 but incorporates finials from previous bellcote, dated 1665. Apex cross to east end. Single cell with south aisle which was extended one bay in 1605; 1722 datestone over window. Re-set C12 doorway with semicircular head on south side. 2- & 3-light windows of various dates. Internally, C13 tomb slab, with wheeled cross and shears, re-set in porch. 2-bay south arcade has pointed arches carried on C13 freestanding octofoil pier. Remains of bracket piscina with ogee head in south aisle, aumbrey with pointed head in south wall of chancel. Panelling from C18 box pews used to line chancel walls.
