Memorial pump and canopy

Memorial pump under ornamental canopy dated 1877. Stands on stepped base of
large stone slabs. Cast-iron; cylindrical pump is fluted, c2½ ft high, with
bucket rest and lion's head spout. 4 columns with Classical, Egyptian, and
Gothic detailing support a ribbed dome with finial. Foundry mark probably GEO.
SMITH, SUN FOUNDRY, GLASGOW. Semicircular arch, with cusping, to each side
inscribed: ERECTED BY R.W. BAINBRIDGE ESQ OF MIDDLETON HOUSE. Oval plaque
above each arch inscribed: IN COMMEMORATION OF A TESTIMONIAL PRESENTED TO HIM &
MRS BAINBRIDGE BY THE EMPLOYEES OF THE LONDON LEAD CO. & OTHER FRIENDS SEPT.
28TH 1877. Corner antifixae have obelisk finials; small crocodile to top of
each cap internally. Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham, has an identical
memorial canopy with an ornamental fountain instead of a pump.
