BRIDEKIRK TALLENTIRE NY 13 NW 2/67 Tallentire Hall 3-3-67 G.V. II

House. 1863 for William Browne, incorporating stair turret of the late C16 hall, with late C19 extensions. Rock-faced calciferous sandstone with eaves cornice, open balustraded parapet and V-jointed quoins, on squared plinth. Graduated greenslate roof with ashlar chimney stacks. 2 storeys, 9 bays, with 2 rear right-angled 2-storey, 3-bay extensions and 3-storey left stair turret. 3 recessed bays flanked by 2 projecting bays; and further 2 recessed bays on right. Central recess has Doric porch and C19 glazed panelled door within. Sash windows in stone architraves. Segmental right bay window. Left return wall has canted bay window and C20 glazed patio. Turret has string courses, battlemented parapet and stepped buttresses. C19 studded plank door in pointed-arched chamfered surround. 2-light C16 chamfered and double-chamfered windows, some blocked and others C19 replacements, most under hoodmoulds. Left rear extension has 2-, 3- and 4-light cross-mullioned windows, under 2-light gabled dormer windows. Right rear extension has large C20 ground-floor window; sash and casement windows. C19 3-storey tower adjoins, with panelled door in round-arched surround and similar round and shouldered-arched sash windows. 2-light round-headed bell openings,with louvred vents, and pyramidal roof. interior has C19 woodwork, including dado panelling, pedimented door architraves and panelled shutters to windows. Interior of turret has newel staircase for its full height. Adjoining stable range has C20 alterations and is not of interest.
