4 houses. 1766-73 by Robert Adam as estate houses for Sir James Lowther, part
of a model village which was never completed. Mixed sandstone rubble walls,
with string courses on 2-storey parts. Graduated greenslate roofs those at ends
hipped; banded cement-rendered chimney stacks. One quadrant of a circus of
which only half was built; central part single-storey, 9 bays with plank doors;
2-storey, single-bay wings at either end. C20 casement windows in original
plain reveals with red sandstone lintels and sills. Semi-derelict in early
1960s, but altered with HBC grant in 1965. See Ancient Monument Society's
