Lowther Lodge

GV II

Lodge for Lowther Castle. 1877 by James Mawson of Lowther for the Earl of Lonsdale. Mixed calciferous and pink sandstone ashlar, with battlemented parapet and string courses. Graduated greenslate roof, partly hipped, with ashlar candlestick chimney stacks. 2 storeys, 3 bays. Panelled doors within battlemented open-sided stone porch. Flanking loops under shaped battlements and shields of Lowther arms. Left return wall facing road has 2- and 3-light windows under hoodmoulds, battlemented gable with flanking octagonal turrets projecting above roof line. Left recessed bay has similar 2-light window and loops above. The original designs for this lodge are in the County Record Office, Carlisle; see H. Colvin, J. Mordaunt Crook and Terry Friedman, Architectural Drawings for Lowther Castle, Westmorland, 1980, p.45.
