Monument commemorating Queen Victoria's accession. Erected 1842 by Mawson of
Lowther; sculptural work by Thomas Bland of Reagill. Ashlar with bas-relief
panels and statue; c.30 ft high overall. 2 steps with plinth, c.6 ft high and
square in plan; corniced, tapered octagonal shaft surmounted by life-size figure
of Britannia holding remains of metal trident in right hand. Bas-relief panel
on each side of plinth. North panel: Wreath with Lowther arms above. South:
Roman letter inscription TO COMMEMORATE THE ACCESSION OF QUEEN VICTORIA TO THE THRONE OF THESE REALMS JUNE 20 1837. East: Seated invalid with goddess Hygeia pouring medicinal waters for him. West: Lion resting on haunches with paw on globe. Enclosure wall is single chamfered course of ashlar with entrance gap to centre of south side; railings and gate removed.
