Country house. 1795 for the Whelpdale family with early C19 extension for the Parkin family. Red sandstone ashlar walls with string courses, eaves cornice, partly open balustraded parapet and angle pilasters carried up as chimneys, all on chamfered plinth. Hipped graduated greenslate roof with red sandstone banded ashlar chimney stacks. 2½ storeys, 7 bays, with flanking 2-storey, single-bay wings. Steps up to central glazed door and fanlight within a stone porch with panel recesses, under console-bracketed cornice and open balustraded parapet. Venetian window over entrance and tripartite attic window. Bow-fronted flanking bays have sash windows with glazing bars, all in plain reveals. Wings have sash windows with glazing bars in plain reveals under open balustraded parapets. Left return wall has pilastered bay window and sash windows similar to facade. Right return wall has large projecting pilastered porch with round arch of alternate voussoirs and flanking brackets; panelled double doors within. Rear recessed 7 bays with projecting pedimented wings, between which is a covered gallery of Ionic columns with plain frieze and modillioned cornice.
