Details

MATTERDALE MATTERDALE END NY 32 SE 5/161 Fox House -

GV II Farmhouse part of former longhouse. Probably third quarter of C17. (1631 date on rack above built-in cupboard, with initials I.W., appears to be an import). Rubble, rendered on front; stone-flagged roof. North side to road blank except for plain boarded door. Main south front 2 storeys, 3 bays. Half-glazed 4-panel door to right bay, in place of former window. Two and three-light stone chamfered-mullioned windows and a small fire window at left. End chimneys. Interior: Ground floor retains heck partition and chamfered beams and joists, except for renewed fire beam. Door from house-place to parlour is flanked by original panelled oak built-in cupboards, the right one dated but see above. Lintel of blocked doorway from former through-passage remains. C18 north extension, with lobby and dairy conceals boulder plinth and blocked window of original 2-cell house. The former downhouse, now converted to a separate dwelling, is too much altered to be of interest.
