7/29 West End Mill
GV II
Water mill and attached house, now one house. Early C18. Dressed limestone, tiled roof, C20 brick stack to right and to rear outshut. Former miller's house has integral outshut. Two-storey, 6-windows; casements. C20 door with sidelights to left of centre, planked door and C20 mullioned casement to left, two 3-light mullioned casements and blocked doorway to right. First floor has five original 2-light mullioned casement and pivot-hung C20 window in former loading bay over door. Coped verges, the left gable with ball finial. Right return has glazed door and 2-light mullioned casement to ground floor, first floor has pivot-hung window, single chamfered light to attic. Left return has C20 casement to loft. Rear outshut to left has glazed door, 2-light mullioned casements and nine C20 roof lights, rear of mill has round arch over dry mill race, C20 French windows over. Interior of mill retains most of machinery in situ; cast-iron water wheel with paddles in closed mill race, gearing wheels on ground floor, two millstones in first floor sitting room. Chamfered beams and open fireplace with segmental brick lintel on brick jambs in former miller's house. A working mill until 1939.
