Details

BERWICK ST. JAMES HIGH STREET SU 03 NE (east side) 3/9 Magna House GV II Detached house. Mid C17, extended c1700. Flint and limestone chequers to C17 build, rubble stone to later build, C20 concrete tiled roof, brick stacks. Two-storey, 3-window; casements. Four- panelled door with flat wooden hood on brackets to centre, two 3- light C20 steel casements to left and one to right. First floor has three wooden 3-light casements. Eaves raised c1700 when extension to south added. Coped verges, right stack with some stone. Right return has blocked attic window. Left return has 1- light recessed chamfered casement. Interior not accessible at time of survey (August 1985), but RCHM recorded deep chamfered beam and open fireplace with chamfered lintel on stone jambs to C17 build, north room of this refitted late C18 with fielded overmantel with cornice and pilastered recesses with cusped ogee-headed front and shaped shelves, first floor planked door with wooden latch.
