5/25 Stables and Archway at Aldwick Court

G.V. II

Stables and Archway. Late C18. Coursed lias with ochre-washed roughcast, dressed stone plinth, openings, cornice and parapet coping with double Roman tile roof to stables. Coursed rubble and freestone dressings to rear of archway, ashlar to garden facade. Stables are a 1 storey range with a pedimented western section of 5 bays with round-arched doorways, oeil de boeuf windows with glazing, a central segmental-headed carriage entrance and round-headed loft doorway above. Plank doors. Connecting range to the east has similar doorways and oeil de boeuf windows. Archway which links to the north-west corner of Aldwick Court (q.v.) has segmental-headed arch and a round-arched recess in which are set several architectural fragments including a dated cartouche.
