2/134 Downham's Cottage - - II
Detached cottage. Late C16, with later alterations and additions. Plastered cob on stone footings; half-hipped thatched roof. Formerly a 3-room, through-passage plan house, the higher end to the right of passage; front internal lateral stack heats hall; left-hand external end stack heats service end; inner room unheated. All stacks with brick shafts. Brick rear outshut under catslide. 2 storeys. Front: 3 window range; early C19 2- and 3-light casement windows to 1st floor, that to the service-end chamber quite early C19; five 2- and 3-light casement windows to ground floor. Interior: 2 plank and muntin screens, the to the passage and the other between hall and inner room, chamfered, carpenter's mitres, and stopped, the panels to the passage screen cut away above. Passage-screen bressumer with run-out stops. Deep chamfered axial ceiling beam to inner room; 3 cross ceiling beams to hall with run- out stops and bar; chamfered cross beam to service end with similar stops. One jointed cruck truss to service end; the other 2 trusses appear to be raised crucks, all morticed and pegged; no evidence of smoke-blackening.
