4/54 Priory House

G.V. II

Small country house, c.1730, 1798, C19, C20. Blue lias, red brick, brown brick, some rendering and some C20 ashlar patching. Low hipped slate roof. 2 1/2 storey, 3 bay front with central doorway with plain rectangular overlight and 6 panelled door flanked by narrow rectangular lights. On each side of doorway is a large semi-circular bay containing 3 long glazing bar sashes. Attached to west bay is a rainwater head inscribed "1798". 3 first floor windows with glazing bar sashes, the 2 flanking windows set in rectangular recesses with splayed brick lintels reaching across the breadth of each recess. Above are 3 small glazing bar sashes and C20 brown brick parapet. The return walls have narrow, C20 red brick bathroom blocks and conservatories. The rear range of the house is c.1730 to which the later front has been added. Internally there is one c.1730 room with niches and fluted pilasters. The plain, elegant staircase is of 1798.
