1 & 2/116 Saling Hall GV 2/5/53 II*

House. Probably early C17 H-plan, late C17 red and blue brick facing to east, west, and main south range. Timber framed. Red plain tiled roof. Curvilinear gables with moulded coping to right and left projecting crosswings. 2 storey and attics to crosswings. 2 storeys to centre range. Moulded eaves and central bands, symmetrically placed doors and windows. One window to crosswing gables. 2:5:2 window range to first floor, 2:3:2 window range to ground floor, of solid mullions with transoms, rubbed brick heads over. East gable panel dated 1699. Doors to left and right of central range, 4 panelled with glazed margins to top lights. Flat canopies on brackets. Left and right returns with similar windows. Left return of 8 window range and 2 hipped dormers. Right return of two window range. 3 red brick chimney stacks to left return, one with attached diagonal shafts. Interior with much C17 panelling to ground floor rooms. C16 linenfold panelling to hall and another room. C17 doors with moulded architraves. C17 main staircase with moulded rails twisted balusters and square newels. C17 enclosed staircase with balustrade of plain bars set fret-wise. 2 late C17 fireplaces with moulded surrounds. RCHM 2.
