1 & 2/118 Church of St. James 1/12/67 GV II*

Parish Church. C19 restorations obscure most dating details, north organ chamber and vestry and south porch were added at this time. C14 west tower. Of flint rubble, with dressings of stone and clunch. Red plain tiled roofs withpierced ridge tiles, stone parapet verges and cross finials to Nave and Chancel. C19 east window of 3 cusped lights with panel tracery over. C19 vestry east window of 2 cusped lights with tracery over in a segmental head. C19 north vestry with lean-to grey slate roof and red brick chimney stack. Chamfered 2 centred door arch with vertically boarded doors, to right of which is an ogee 2 light window under square head. East wall with 2 light window with tracery under segmental pointed head. Nave north wall has C19 two, 2 light windows with tracery over, between which is a C14 2 centred doorway (blocked) with label over. Chancel south wall with 2 C19 two light windows with tracery over and labels. Central 2 centred doorway with foliate stops to labels. Nave south wall with 3 similar windows, buttress to left angle. C19 south porch with parapet verge and cross finial. 2 centred doorway with moulded label. Roof with collar to each rafter pair and moulded wall plate. Nailed, vertically boarded south door. C14 crenellated west tower with moulded stone cornice and gargoyles to each face. Of 3 stages. Angled buttresses to west face. West and south windows to first stage of one light with moulded label. South wall second stage with a similar window. Bell chamber with a window of one trefoiled light to each face. Interior Chancel roof of 7 cants with moulded wall plates. A moulded and carved stepped band follows through north and south walls and over the coloured tiled reredos of 3 panels. There is a shelf below to the north wall. Seat below south window. Wooden altar rail. Nave roof with arched braces to collars of king post. Bosses to soffits. Solid ashlar and wall post braces. Chancel arch 2 centred, moulded with shafts. Blocked north door with pointed segmental arch. Tower arch 2 centred, moulded. C15 octagonal font with sunk traceried panels, C19 stem. Small recess with 2 centred arch in wall by south door, possibly a stoop. C19 octagonal pulpit with traceried panels. C19 stained glass to windows. Wall monuments to Elizabeth Goodrich 1799, Mary Sheldon 1806. RCHM 1.
