6/46 Former Parish Church of St. Barbara 1.2.67 I

Former parish church, now redundant. C12, C13, C14, C15, C16, restored 1924. Coursed limestone rubble and ashlar, pantiled, plain tiled, lead end asbestos sheet roofs having raised stone coped gables. Unbuttressed west tower, clerestoried nave, south aisle and porch, chancel. C12 coursed rubble west tower of 2 stages with C14 ashlar belfry and plain parapet. Chamfered string courses, and in the belfry stage are 2,light reticulated louvered lights with cusped ogee heads and quatrefoils in a pointed hollow chamfered surround. To the west a single round headed window to the ground stage and to the south side; single similar windows to the middle stage, all with chamfered surrounds and hoods. To the rendered north nave wall is a blocked late C13 Caernarvon arched doorway and in the chancel a single C13 lancet. The clerestorey has a single 3 light recut C15 window with 4 centred arched head and hollow chamfered surround. The chancel east window is C16, of 3 lights with chamfered mullions and surround with plain hood. In the chancel south wall are a C13 2 light Y-traceried window and a lancet. C19 3 light perpendicular style east window in the south aisle, and to the south a matching 3 light window, both with cusped heads to the lights and cusped trefoils to the segmental heads. Gabled C14 south porch having a deeply chamfered and pointed outer doorway, side benches and a C15 inner door with hollow chamfered pointed surround set in a rectangular frame with sunk trilobes to the spandrels. The southern clerestorey has 2 three light windows matching that to the north.Interior: 2 bay C13 south arcade with octagonal piers and reveals, moulded capitals and double chamfered arches. Broad tower arch has half engaged round shafts to the reveals with chamfered capitals, now supporting a double chamfered 4 centred arch. Extensive traces of red paint on the reveals. The C11 chancel arch has plain chamfered imposts and a round head. Above are a painted Royal Arms, beneath which traces of a C15 Doom can be discerned. The C15 nave roof has through purlins and chamfered principals. In the chancel is a pointed and chamfered aumbry on the south side and a rectangular aumbry to the north. Fittings: C18 panelled oak pulpit and some C18 raised and fielded softwood panelling in the nave and chancel. Also an C18 octagonal softwood statue base in the south aisle with moulded base and cornice. C14 plain octagonal font with chamfered top and base with plinth.
