13/76 Nos 1 and 2 West Town Cottages -
GV II
2 cottages, formerly one house. C17 or earlier. Rendered, probably cob on stone rubble footings ; corrugated iron roof, gabled at ends ; left end stack with brick shaft, large projecting front lateral stack with set-offs, brick shaft and bread oven. Plan: No access to interior at time of survey (1987); plan form uncertain but probably a single depth range, 2 rooms wide. C20 flat-roofed single storey rear left addition. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical front, No 1 (to the left) has a front door to the right, one ground floor C20 sash and a small-pane C19 or C20 first floor casement. No 2 (Cheney Cottage) has a front door to the right and 1 ground floor and one first floor casement. Interior: Not inspected at time of survey. An interior inspection might necessitate revising the suggested dating. Group value with the Old Gatehouse.
