GV II*

Large house now offices, house and 3 flats. Dated 1684 with early C17 range to rear and C19 side wing. Deeply-coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings; earlier work in limestone rubble with gritstone dressings; stone slate roofs. EXTERIOR: 1684 part of 2 storeys with cellars and attic. 2:5:2-window range forming symmetrical front with gabled cross wings; single-storey, 3-window range side wing on right. Parallel early C17 wing to rear left. Main front: chamfered plinth; large quoins. Stone steps with iron handrails to central doorway having bolection-moulded architrave and consoles to segmental pediment dated '1684' on frieze. 2-light double-chamfered mullioned windows beneath continuous dripmoulds; iron casements with horizontal glazing bars. First floor centre has broad single-light window with moulded sill, architrave and keystone. Crosswing gables: pedimented 2-light windows to attic; coped parapets with ball finials. Centre has balustrade with square balusters, dies with half-baluster stops; ball finials. 3 gabled roof dormers flanked by ashlar stacks to front slope. C19 side wing: 2-light windows as main range; at junction is a blocked doorway with keystone. Right return: large external stack; gable with ball finials. Left return: parapet with 2 gables then the lower gable of early C17 range having 5-light mullioned windows to ground and first floors; 3-light window to attic. Side wall of this range has quoins to left of a later first floor entrance; other end gable (to north) is splayed and has deeply-moulded 3-light mullioned window to ground floor and plainer 3-light window above. INTERIOR: bolection-moulded fireplaces and wall panelling in same style. Main entrance room with oak-panelled dado and exposed ceiling beams with stopped chamfers. Painted C17 staircase has channelled newels, turned balusters and deep-section handrail; ball finials and pendants. Roof trusses with curved principal rafters.



Early C17 wing has principal-rafter trusses with diagonal struts.
