GRISTHORPE MAIN STREET TA 08 SE 5/18 (south side) Gristhorpe Hall (formerly 18.1.67 listed as The Hall under Village Street) GV II
House. Mid C18, extended c.1800; further extension and alteration late C19. For John Beswick. Limestone ashlar, rendered and whitewashed on street side; slate roof; stone stacks. Originally 3-cell plan, remodelled and extended to left and right c.1800; portico and kitchen wing added late C19. Street front: 2-storey, 3-window quoined front, with later 2-storey bay to left and ramped-up wall to right. Gabled and quoined projecting centre bay contains panelled door with fanlight and pilasters, beneath pedimented Doric portico with modillion cornice and entablature. Oculus in plain surround above. Remaining windows are 4-pane sashes. Modillion eaves and ashlar gable coping. Garden front: 2-storeys and attic; 3 bays incorporating full height 3-window canted bay with single bay additions at each side, ramped up. Half-glazed door approached by stone steps to centre of canted bay. 12-pane sashes to centre bay; tripartite sashes to outer bays; 16-pane sashes to additional bays. Stone sills to all windows. Tripartite keyed lintels, quoins and raised first floor band to original build. Coped gables and shaped kneelers. End and left and right of centre stacks. Interior: early C19 window and doorway panelling survives throughout the house. Good Art Nouveau fireplace in ground floor room at end right. Early C19 open string staircase, with turned balusters, shaped cheekpieces and wreathed handrail. All first floor rooms except the centre one have early C19 fluted fireplace surrounds with paterae. Late C19 kitchen wing not of special interest.
