Late C18. 3 storeys, rendered. 2 windows, double-hung sashes with glazing
bars. Heavy cornice above ground floor. Ground floor has 1 3-light window.
Passage archway to left. Early C20 doorway to right with Ionic reeded pilasters
on plinths and non-classical pediment. Half-glazed double doors. Originally
the White Horse and Griffin, in compliment to the Cholmley family. The
first stage coach from Whitby to York ran from here in 1788. Mentioned
in Miss Ethel Kidson's novel 'Herringfleet'. Charles Dickens records that
oyster shell grottos were a feature of the yard.
Nos 84 to 90 (even), Former White Horse Inn, The Black Horse Public House,
Nos 93 to 100 (consec),Nos 105 to 112A (consec) & Nos 114 to 117 (consec)
form a group.
