Details

GROSMONT NORTH YORK MOORS NZ 80 NW RAILWAY 3/134 Grosmont Station and attached yard wall GV II Railway station. c.1846. By G.T.Andrews, architect to the York and North Midland Railway Company. Hammered sandstone with sandstone ashlar quoins and dressings; slate roofs. L-shaped on plan, with outshut, and yard at rear. 2-storey, 2-window range with 2-storey, 1-window gabled crosswing at left. Paired board doors in ogee-arched surrounds to 2-window range. Mullioned window of 2 shouldered lights with flat lintel and 2-centred relieving arch at right. Crosswing has offset diagonal buttress at left, and ground floor mullioned window of 3 shouldered lights beneath flat lintel and 2-centred relieving arch. First floor windows are all of 2 mullioned lights with shallow ogee heads, that in crosswing with 2-centred relieving arch. Openings all quoined. Plain bargeboards and finial to crosswing gable. Platform front: 1-storey, 4-bay range at right of 2-storey, 1-window gable wall of main front. Gable wall has 4-light canted bay window on ground floor, with shouldered lights and half-hexagonal hipped roof with embattled eaves. First floor window of 2 ogee-headed mullioned lights with flat lintel and 2-centred relieving arch. Plain bargeboards and finial to gable end. 1-storey range has two chamfered Tudor-arched doorways with board doors in centre. 2-light mullioned window at left, and similar 3-light window at right, both with shouldered lights. Overhanging eaves on shaped brackets. Right end conical stack. Rear: gable ends have fancy bargeboards and finials. Banks of three conjoined octagonal chimney stacks rise at rear of crosswing and at junction of main and platform ranges. Yard wall is approximately 2.75 metres high with sloped coping, stepped up to outshut. Gateway with plain lintel and board door in back wall. Lean-to buildings erected against exterior of yard wall are not of special interest. Interior of Ladies' Room: plain chimneypiece with bracketed shelf and cast iron firegrate. Moulded dado and'cornice. Panelled shutters and doors with original ironwork.
