4/45 The Salon
GV II
Tollhouse, now hairdressing salon. Late C18 with later alteration.
Hammered sandstone with pantile roof. Central-entry plan. 1-storey,
3-bay front. 4-panel door, beneath radial fanlight, flanked by tall
round-arched sashes with radial-glazed heads. All openings have keyed
archivolts. Coped gables and plain kneelers. End right stack. The
tollhouse stood on the Whitby to Saltersgate turnpike, opened in 1760,
and is included for historic interest.
