SE 68 SW SPROXTON B1257 (east side) 6/127 Church of St Chad, gate and gateposts 4.1.55 - II

Church and gate and gatepost. Late C16/early C17 re-erected 1879 by G G Scott Junior and Temple Moore. Limestone ashlar, stone slate roof, wood and lead bellcote. Single-cell nave and chancel of 1 bay each, divided by screen. Entrance in west front: 6-panel double doors, middle post ornamented with attached turned balusters. Panelled wood infill to fanlight beneath round arch on moulded imposts. Oval window above. Simple wooden bellcote with pyramidal lead roof. 2 stepped 3-light windows to south side, the central light being round-headed, with stone hoodmoulds. 1 small square-headed window to north nave wall. East window as south ones. Steeply pitched roof with gable copings and shaped kneelers. Interior: C15 glass fragments in north nave window. Gate posts: C19 sandstone. Scroll moulding and double entablature with moulded cornices and ball finials. C20 wrought iron gates. Formerly chapel to West Newton Grange, Oswaldkirk. Pevsner, Yorkshire: the North Riding, 1966.
