6/42 Gates, gate piers and flanking walls at Lodge to Newby Hall
GV II
Gates, gate piers and flanking walls. Early C19. Wrought iron, gritstone and ashlar. Double gate with twisted dog bars and scrolled upper half, overall height approximately 4 metres, flanked by piers of rusticated masonry with modillion cornices and dragon crests. Flanking wall ramped down to 2 pairs of lower gate piers of similar design and with lion crests. Right gate intact: approximately 2 metres high with C and S scrolls. Left gate blocked. Ramped wall continues to left with 2 buttresses and further pair of gates with plain bars and scrolled top flanked by rusticated piers, the right pier with eagle crest. Low curving C20 wall attached to left wall incorporates two C18-style piers with ball finials. A free-standing length of wall to right, approximately 1.5 metres to north of lodge of limestone with 3 rusticated piers with ball finials.
