9/63 Garden walls with gate piers and gates to south and north of Dougill Hall

GV II

Garden wall with gate piers and gates. Probably 1722, contemporary with hall (qv) or shortly after, for I and E Dougill. Coursed grey gritstone, ashlar south piers; wrought-iron gates. Garden wall encloses front of house on west, south and east sides, the piers and gates standing at centre of the south side; the area enclosed being approximately 30 metres long and 20 metres wide. The wall approximately 1.5 metres high on south, ramped up to 2.5 metres high at sides, with moulded ashlar coping. Piers: approximately 2.5 metres high with roll-moulded chamfers, deep cornice and pyramidal finials. Gates: possibly C20 work with bars, dogbars and horizontal top rails. Low rear wall: curved, approximately 1.2 metres high; solid gate piers with faceted finials.
