Mr Aislabie's Kitchen approximately 10 metres south-east of the Octagon Tower
GV
II
Remains of covered cooking hearth. c1730. Probably by Robert Doe for John
Aislabie. Coursed limestone rubble and brick. Entrance was on the east
side, with a chimney opening on the west side. Arched roof survives, but
the facade has collapsed and the chimney opening is enlarged. Interior:
against the west end there is a brick fireplace, part whitewashed. The
structure is approximately 3 metres wide and 4 metres long. The original
form was probably a rustic cave covered in turf, similar in style to the
tunnel nearby (qv), and used in food preparation for elaborate picnics. It
was described by a contemporary as 'Mr Aislabie's kitchen', and 'a cave for
the provision of viands'. It was in fact a very early type of barbecue.
W T C Walker, personal communication.
