EAST ROUNTON, ROUNTON GRANGE, Stable Cottage, Engine House, Corner Cottage and Coachmans Cottage

Coach house with flat, stabling and washing yard. 1875 by Philip Webb for Sir I Lowthian Bell. Light red brick with ashlar dressings, weatherboarding, plaster; pantiled roof with brick chimneys. Square plan around covered yard. Main south front 2 storeys, 5 wide bays. Wide, splayed central carriage arch whose round head rests on curved stone imposts. Flanking brick bays; the whole ground floor centre recessed under a coved jetty resting on rounded stone band. First floor weatherboarded above; side bays brick. Casements in inner, sashes with glazing bars in outer bays; and a segment-headed door in right bay. Hipped roof has 2 ridge stacks with dentil cornices. Single-storey ranges behind. Interior: king-post and queen-post roof trusses, some of very wide span. A highly innovative and imaginative design. Roof in poor condition at time of survey.
