Details
GREAT AYTON - NZ 51 SE 2/123 Farmbuildings and walls to south west of Airyholme Farmhouse GV II Barn and byre, early-mid C18; walls of similar date. Roughly herringbone-tooled coursed sandstone; pantiled roofs with stone dressings. 2 sections. Left part 1 storey, 2 bays. 2 boarded doors under plain lintels. Taller right part, possibly also 2 bays. Stable door at left under broken lintel. Otherwise blank or concealed by added front building. Stone copings and square kneelers. Load- ing door and owl holes in right gable end; owl hole and 2 pigeon holes in left. Wall, with gabled coping and openings at both ends (west near barn a boarded door, east near house an iron gate) forms south east boundary of garden. Similar wall, ramped up near house, encloses opposite side and forms rear wall of small outbuilding with boarded doors on north and west. Central wall, with flat slab coping, ramped up to about 8 feet, has low door near barn, gateway near house. Cartshed to north of barn, boarded building against north wall and rubble building with concrete-tiled roof built against taller part of barn, are not of interest.
