GV
II
Cowhouse with hayloft. Early C18.

MATERIALS: thinly-coursed sandstone, roofing mainly of Welsh slate but with stone slate eaves courses.

EXTERIOR: the two-storey, three-bayed building is quoined with large quoins. The entrance front is gabled, facing into the farm yard. This has a ground-floor doorway with a deep, stone lintel to the left and a first-floor doorway with a timber lintel accessed via external stone steps that rise to the right. There is a two-light casement to the first-floor with a timber lintel. Above, set in the gable, thre is another casement, this having a projecting ledge above. The side walls have ventilation slits, the left wall also having a square pitching opening to the first-floor.

INTERIOR: retains C18 floor beams and two principal rafter trusses with cambered tie beams.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT: the cow house is included for group value with the nearby late medieval barn that was encased in stonework in the late C17 or early C18, possibly around the same time that the cowhouse was constructed.
