Boer War memorial plaque. c1902. By G. Steele, sculptor of Wombwell.
Well-carved sandstone surround; panel probably of granite. Corbels
carved with lion's heads and Yorkshire roses flank the inscription
'DUTY NOBLY DONE'. Above, an inscribed panel in moulded architrave
flanked by half-detached soldiers in battle dress set before draped
flags. Shallow cornice beneath ogee-headed feature with unicorn
crest within carved foliage; crown at apex. Inscription: dedication
to, and names of, the people of Wombwell who served in the Boer War
1899-1902.
