5/32 Terrace steps and urns to south and west of Brodsworth Hall

GV II

Steps and urns. 1866-1867 for Charles Thellusson. Marble. 4 sets of steps: 3 sets along south garden front, the 4th set opposite west front. Each has well-carved greyhounds (couchant and facing inwards) flanking a 7-rise flight with ashlar-coped side walls ramping up to broad-rimmed urns on square bases. Matching urns stand separately at each end of the south and west terrace. Commissioned in Italy by Chevalier Casentini who provided many marble sculptures for the interior of Brodsworth Hall (q.v.). Account books cited by Girouard (p.876) note a consignment in 1867 of "..marble steps and figures and Fountain vase in Pleasure grounds".

Mark Girouard, "Brodsworth Hall, Yorkshire", Country Life, Oct 10, 1963.
